As readers know, the Katfriends at the Academy of European Law (ERA) in Trier are always busy organizing programmes and courses on all aspects of European law, including IP and digital and IT law.
For those looking to get a deep dive in either subject, ERA is organizing two distinct summer courses this year.
The first is the Summer Course on European Intellectual Property Law, which will take place in person in Trier (Germany) between 30 June and 4 July 2025. Intended to offer a thorough introduction to European IP law, the course will be covering key topics like:
- EU and international legal framework
- Trade marks and designs, including the EU design reform
- Geographical indications, including for handicraft products
- Copyright and the digital age
- Patent law, SPCs, the Unified Patent Court and patent litigation
- IP exhaustion
- IP licensing
- Cross-border litigation and enforcement of IP rights
Besides a visit to the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg, this summer course offers a varied social programme consisting of networking dinners with local specialities and wines, a guided walking tour through the historic city centre of Trier, and a vineyard tour followed by a wine-tasting.
The second is the Summer Course on EU Digital and Information Technology Law, which will take place online between 15 and 16 September 2025. This course will provide a thorough introduction to European IT law and digital law, with a focus on emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things, and EU initiatives on access to data in the digital environment. Key topics include:
- The legal and institutional framework of EU digital and IT law
- AI legal framework and liability issues in the EU
- Product safety in the data economy
- E-commerce in the EU legal order and role of online intermediaries
- Blockchain and smart contracts
- Intellectual property law in the digital world
- Cybersecurity and cyber resilience in the age of Internet of Things
- Competition law aspects, digital platforms, AI and big data
