EUIPO’s IP Case Law Conference, 7 and 8 July 2022

Building on the previous editions of the Intellectual Property Case Law Conferences (“IPCLC”), of 2016, 2018, and 2020, the Boards of Appeal of the EUIPO, in cooperation with the EUIPO Academy, will organise a hybrid fourth edition of the IPCLC in Alicante, on 7 and 8 July 2022. This Conference marks the 25th anniversary of the Boards of Appeal and will bring together leading intellectual property experts from multiple jurisdictions, representing a broad spectrum of professional interests with representatives from some of the leading IP offices, lawmakers, judges, academics, and lawyers. Contextualized in a sectorial approach – including areas such as health, fashion, environmental, artificial intelligence, automotive, and food industry – expert panels will consider the challenges and developments in IP case law and legislation that lie ahead. Music Copyright Infringement: Global Perspectives, UIC John Marshall Law School Center for Intellectual Property, Information & Privacy Law, 18 March 2022

UIC John Marshall Law School Center for Intellectual Property, Information & Privacy Law will organise a conference focused on how courts adjudicate music copyright infringement disputes in Asia, Europe, and North America. Topics include access and substantial similarity, fair use, performers’ rights, moral rights, expert testimony, the role of lay listeners, sound sampling, as demonstrated in dispositions of litigated and settled infringement disputes. The event will take place on 18 March 2022 from 1:15pm to 7:00pm (CET) and registrations are open here.

Intellectual Property Awareness Summit – IPAS 2022, The Center for IP Understanding, 5 April 2022

The IPAS is an annual event that examines the impact of IP awareness on innovation, business, and people – and the strategies for improving it. Attendees – both in-person and through livestream – include IP owners of all types, educators, creators, lawyers, policymakers and investors. IPAS 2022 will be hosted by the Center for IP Understanding in conjunction with Institute for Business Innovation at the UC Berkeley-Haas School of Business. It will take place on 5 April 2022, from 11:00am to 4:00pm (PDT) in a hybrid format, and the topic of this year’s event will be “The Future of IP”. Registration is open here.

IELR 5.1 pre-publication event: EULAs: Friends or Foes?, The Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London, 3 March 2022

In celebration of the article ‘End-User Flexibilities in Digital Copyright Law – An Empirical Analysis of End-user License Agreements’ by Péter Mezei and István Harkai, Queen Mary University will bring an event to discuss how private norms allow for or diminish the exercise of end-user flexibilities related to copyright protected subject matter. The event will take place on 3 March 2022, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm (CET) and will be hosted by Dr Yin Harn Lee (University of Bristol) with our PermaKat, Professor Eleonora Rosati (Stockholm University), and Professor Uma Suthersanen (Queen Mary University of London) on the panel. Fair Dealing Week, 21 to 25 February 2022

The ALT Copyright and Online Learning Special Interest Group (CoOLSIG) will organise the UK Fair  Dealing Week, which will provide opportunities for everyone in the education, research and cultural heritage communities to learn more about this valuable framework, as basics concepts, along with best practice, will be explored by copyright scholars and practitioners. WIPO Symposium on Trade Secrets and Innovation 2022, 23 and 24 May 2022

WIPO will hold a hybrid symposium on 23 and 24 May 2022 to discuss the roles of trade secret systems in supporting innovation and knowledge sharing in a rapidly changing innovation ecosystem, which is increasingly international and driven by digital information.
