Second ID5 Annual Meeting in Beijing

On November 1-2, the ID5 partners met in Beijing for a round of discussions.

ID5 is the multilateral cooperation forum, inaugurated in 2015, which allows the five largest design offices, the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the United States Patent and Trademark office (USPTO), the Japan Patent Office (JPO), the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) and the Chinese State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) to seek cooperation synergies for the benefit of users in the field of design registration.

At their meeting, the ID5 Partners agreed to launch twelve projects. EUIPO has the lead or co-lead in four projects: the catalogue of the view and drawing requirements for designs; study of product indications; the study of underlying economic factors; and IP office actions on how they impact global design filings and study of practices on protection of new technological designs.

The Partners discussed new operational guidelines for the functioning of the forum. The meeting saw an open discussion on further cooperation within ID5 and with WIPO, most notably on a global standard for graphical representation.

A one day session for users from User Associations from the five Partner Offices was held on the second day. This included a discussion with stakeholders on the progress related to DesignView and the integration of JPO into the tool. The Partners also agreed on the launch of the new provisional ID5 website (www.id-five.org).

EUIPO was designated as the next ID5 Secretariat with a view to holding midterm and annual meetings in 2017.
