Registration is now open for UIC John Marshall Law School’s 64th Annual Intellectual Property (IP) Conference on Friday, Nov. 13, 2020. For the first time, it will be online and accessible to anyone from their office or at home. With over 80 conference faculty, 14 sessions, virtual receptions, and an expected 500 registrants, its organizers expect it to be their largest and liveliest one ever. Sessions include:
- IP in a Post-COVID World
- IP and Asia: Rivalries and Opportunities
- Legal Realism and IP
- Breakout sessions focused on inhouse counsel, global IP, and privacy issues
- Current developments in patents, trademarks, designs, and copyright law
Modeled after the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos and the Annual Fordham IP Conference in New York, the Conference features highly interactive sessions with newsmakers in the IP, privacy, and technology community. This year’s expected speakers include Daren Tang, WIPO’s incoming Director-General, Hon. Paul Michel, former Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit; Hon. Andrei Iancu, Director, United States PTO, and Hon. António Campinos; President, European Patent Office. As usual, there will be senior leaders from the judiciary, academia, and the Bar, including Asian practitioners and corporate counsel. A striking feature of the Conference is its blend of corporate, governmental, civil society, practitioner, and academic perspectives.
According to Professor Daryl Lim, an IP observer who helms the Conference, legal issues in IP have become increasingly complex. The overlay of far-reaching technological developments such as AI requires legal professionals to be able to both understand and communicate across the sub-specialties such as patent, copyright, trademark, and privacy laws. The same can be said about how cross-border commerce requires cross-border partnerships. For this reason, the increased the number of such sessions so that it continues to offer attendees takeaways that are practical, forward-looking, and comprehensive.
